Chapter 7: Camp on the Roads of Alania
After their goblin battle, the mercenaries didnt move very fast. Greysoul was a strong horse, but he was carrying three people and trying to keep pace with a dwarf, human on foot, and a lame wolf. The sun was beginning to slide behind the Central Mountains in the west and cast the sky in hues of orange and pink.
Damn, we wont make Novice in time, Mia murmured.
* * *
As Thalias group crested a hill, they saw a group of people and horses walking toward them. The priestess stood in her stirrups and looked them over. She could make out their silhouettes at this distance, but not anything more. A large horse with an equally large rider, two people on footone might be a dwarf, a dog, and another horse and rider, though there was something large and odd on the sides of the smaller horse.
* * *
Veriss examined the road before them and the surrounding hillside. Mia was right. Novice was not in sight and the day was falling. She figured they had mine as well strike up a camp for the night and keep their strength up. But she was not hired to think. Only to defend the others. She let the decision be their on what to do. But something caught her eyes. Figures, barely visible, on the horizon. She squinted, attempting to get a better view of them, but the sun shone in her eyes, blinding her. There are others, up the road... I cannot make them out... she said, patting a tired workhorse. Greysoul took a deep breath and stood in place. There was no doubt that they were tired. Even the horse showed it. But Veriss knew they needed to be on their toes. The area was apparently dangerous, since they had run into such a force of trained goblins.
Song rode behind the others, carving away at a piece of wood she had found. Hearing somebody say something about somebody up the road, she looked onward. She put away her carving and carving knife into her pack. She patted Lazorus on the side to keep him alert. He was looking rather tired, and she felt horrible about pushing him along more, but it was safer with a group.
Dont worry, Lazorus. Ill give you lots of apples to eat if we ever stop, you can have the ones in reserve, she said, patting his neck. She then moved her hand towards her sword to keep it ready for anything that might attack.
* * *
Azalas ears twitched slightly as the sensitive tips picked up hoof beats from far off. Straining his eyes forward, he saw several figures on horseback approaching them, and from the glint his eyes picked up as the sun struck one of the weapons, they were armed. These times didnt have many soldiers traveling the roads, and bands of adventurers were rampant, but so were highwaymen. Some people are approaching. They could be thieves, but not to many of them ride on horseback, he said rather casually, although he was a bit more alert now. Im going to go on foot until we pass them. If they do attack, one spell should cause them to flee in terror, although if there is a mage among them, which is unlikely, itll make things a bit more difficult.
Dismounting his horse, he pulled the top of his cloak around his face slightly, causing the material to wrap just under his nose. It was precautionary, he was chanting a spell, and if the group didnt mean any harm, it wouldnt look good if someone was chanting a spell, and might cause a misunderstanding.
Veriss held her hand up, signaling the others to stop as she pulled Greysoul to a stop as well. There, she said, pointing a man out who came down a hill. His mouth was covered, much like a raider might to disguise his face to keep unrecognized. He appears to be approaching us. I will speak with him, she declared. She dismounted in the manner of a knight. She left the two frailer women. I will be but a moment...
The giant of a woman began to walk towards the man that approached them, holding her hand up as a hail. To him, she was probably a walking brick wall. She was abnormally muscular and her features were quite masculine. A rather large sword hung from her hip, larger than swords were normally made, two handed or otherwise. She wore armor that was not connected, but each piece was strapped on individually over chain mail. Her armor and sheath had the stains of blood on them, fairly fresh. We are friends. We are traveling to Novice, she called out in a fairly monotone voice. Her expression was serious and stoic. It did not change as she spoke. They were coming within reach of conversation from a distance and Veriss stopped. She did not make a move for her sword. My name is Veriss Trelem, she said. To anyone that knew the hierarchy of Alan, it was possible to know the Trelem name. They were nobles. Veriss was the adopted daughter that ran from home after murdering her brother and marred his companions beyond recognition after they killed her mother. She had been the talk of the town before she left. Her father was a high official in the Alanian military. Who are you? And do you name yourself friend?
Once Veriss was out of the saddle, Mia could see ahead of them and saw the man walking towards them, as well as two people on horse back further back on the road. The sun was in her vision, but she blocked her eyes and studied the individual meeting with Veriss. Instantly, she recognized the handsome elf.
Azala! Mia called before he could answer Veriss. She hopped out of the saddle, only to be sharply reminded of her pain after relaxing for so long. After a moment of recovery, she limped toward Azala and Veriss, Lucied sorely following at her heels.
Ah, splendid, they know each other. For a minute I thought I was gonna have to fight someone, Song said happily. She got off Lazorus, the two of them following right after Mia. She cautiously approached, making sure that Lazorus wasnt going to be approached. She stood quietly watching the little reunion or whatever it was, she patted Lazoruss head. Suppose nows a good time for that apple? she said, pulling one out and giving it to the pegasus, who munched it down.
Azala had been softly chanting a spell as Veriss approached, although he had his arms crossed, and took a rather casual stance. As Veriss was introducing herself, a Sylph spirit had formed at his back, and he could feel the power envelop his body. A protection spell against physical attacks, but it would allow him some respite if an attack came. As Mia approached, he lost his concentration, and the Sylph spirit went back into the fae dimension. Eh, Mia? His eyes were drawn to the limp, and he winced. Another scar for your collection, I take it? Your going to get yourself killed before your five hundred, you know?
Pulling down the cloak to reveal his face. Truth be told, he was a bit more comfortable with it off. He looked back briefly, and motioned for Thalia and Avion to come, before turning back to Mia and Veriss. I didnt think you were the type to be on a crusade with a knights party... after all, you are half infernal, evil, despised, dark elf, he chuckled lightly at that remark. In his travels, several tribes of dark elves had proven to just want to live in peace, and others avoided him like the plague. What brings you out here?
Aiyanna felt a jolt as the horse came to a stand. She grudgingly opened her eyes and hopped off not so gracefully from the gigantic warhorse. Her staffs crystal orb floated above the head of the staff as a sign of her mana returning. A friend Mia? Aiyanna asked Mia as she eyed the new comers carefully. Good timing, we need a priestess to heal Mia.
Veriss stood still for a moment, examining the situation before simply nodding to Azala. She found it strange that he did not introduce himself properly, but there seemed to be no threat, since Mia believed him to be in good trust from some previous experience with him. The warrior woman looked back to the others, checking her horse, who was loyally awaiting orders. Veriss backed off a bit and stood to the side. She didnt intend to break into any sort of reunion.
Dralock had been walking quietly, when the other group approached. When it became clear that Mia was acquainted with one of them, he decided to take the opportunity to sit down and watch the others. He never was one to converse much.
Actually, were mercenaries, Mia replied. Were escorting the sorceress to Roid. She gestured back at the young woman on Greysoul.
At Azalas beckon, the two riders with him came forward, one was a beautiful blonde priestess of Marfa on a delicate white horse and the other was a broad young man on a horse about the same size as Greysoul.
Oh dear, you are injured. Do you need my help? the priestess asked, looking over Mia and Veriss.
It would be appreciated, we ran into a horde of goblins this afternoon, Mia replied. Lets make camp, what do you say? she suggested, turning to her companions.
* * *
Aiyanna sighed and sat down to rest her still tired limbs. She moved her fingers in small, swift movements and her backpack floated and set neatly in front of her. Peering into the backpack, Aiyanna took out a small leg of ham and vegetables. I am going to gather some wood, anyone feel like coming with me? Aiyanna asked as she got up.
Veriss turned around and walked back to her horse. She began to unpack her things as Aiyanna requested company on the hunt for wood. Veriss was not opposed to the idea. She did not want to be rude to the priestess, but what injuries were left behind from the sorceress potion were of little consequence and the healer had no need to waste her energies on such things. The pain did not bother her anyway. Veriss placed the things next to her horse and patted him reassuringly. The horse just began to stroll around on his own, eating at his own leisure without restraint.
I will go with you, Veriss said suddenly, putting her things down. She decided that it was necessary for either her, Dralock, or Mia to go along with the sorceress. Mia was predisposed with dealing with their camp-mates and Dralock seemed to be pleased being left alone. Veriss, on the other hand, was planning to do nothing more than meditate or help wherever needed.
Thank you Veriss. Aiyanna started out in a direction she was sure of quickest gathering of good firewood. Her brother taught many things, as he was a ranger. She wasnt good as he was, but she knew the basics of camping out in the wilderness. There should be good firewood that way.
Unlike Aiyanna, Veriss was not as adept at woodscraft, despite the fact that she had been living there for two years. She still relied on towns for provisions and the such. The sorceress declared that she thought wood would be found in one direction. Veriss had no idea where she got that notion, but she trusted her word. Veriss didnt have any experience in it. Her judgment had no place in it. The warrioress followed the sorceress dutifully and silently. She kept her eyes open for wood, but this was not her forté. She decided she would be of better service to watch for dangers and to carry the wood instead.

Nessa breathed a heavy sigh of relief when it was clear that the strangers meant no harm. With all that had happened that day he was certain he didnt have enough fight left in him for another battle. At the first indication of breaking out camp the boy sat down on a rock and kicked back his water skin long enough to make it a wonder he didnt drown.
Song set up a little ways away from the group, but still looked as though she was in the group. She let Lazorus munch at the grass. She sat on her blankets turning her back from the group to work on a carving. She might look a wee bit suspicious with her back turned, but she didnt care. She continued to carve away at the little statue of a castle. She noticed Lazorus inching his way closer to Nessa. She kept a hard glare at Nessa unsure if the guy would hurt her dear friend.
A glint of wonder filled Nessas eyes as he looked up to see Lazorus slowly approach him, though he did not notice Songs hard gaze. In the heat of everything it never fully registered in his mind that Songs mount was a real pegasus! He had never seen one before, and until then he thought they existed only in childrens stories. Nessa would very much have liked to pet the animal, but he was still beyond arms reach and he didnt want to spook Lazorus with sudden movement. The young man then reached into his pack and pulled from it a generous chunk of salted meat and offered it to the pegasus. He wasnt sure if horses ever ate meat but perhaps Lazorus would at least come closer to smell the object. Nessa then did something not many would expect him capable of. He began to sing. It was a soft tune and he did not sing very loudly, it was meant only for himself and Lazorus, anyone who heard would have had to stop and listen.
Each heart is a pilgrim,
each one wants to know
the reason why the winds die
and where the stories go.
Pilgrim, in your journey
you may travel far,
for pilgrim its a long way
to find out who you are...
Lazorus approached closer towards the meat. He came close enough to smell it and then looked down at the grass. He perked his ears up to hear the song.
Song got up wondering what the boy was holding. She didnt want Lazorus to get poisoned and she didnt need someone attempting to kidnap him. Whatcha ya trying to give him? And why are you singing? Doesnt seem like a very joyous occasion to me, she asked, moving towards the young man slowly. She was unsure if he would be like the woman from earlier and just try and attack her.
Nessa was startled by Songs sudden words, she didnt seem too happy that he was trying to entice her animal. Im sorry, its just some meat, I only meant to pet him. And the song is no joyous tune, its about a lost wanderer finding home in the last place he expected.
Really? Well then, where was home? she asked sitting down looking ready for him to tell the story. Lazorus stood behind Song nuzzling the back of her head. Song wondered about home, then began to wonder where these people had come from. She highly doubted any of them where from around her area. Oh, yeah, my name is Song by the way.
Im Nessa, the boy replied. Home is a tiny village a few miles north of Zaxon, and the pilgrim was my father. My mother wrote the song for him before I was born and taught it to me. I guess I got her voice. Nessa then started nibbling on the meat as he told his story. My father was a soldier for the Marmo army decades ago, he fought in the battle against Kashue and lost a leg there, he still jokes that its probably hanging above some merchants mantle. Marmo didnt have much use for him after that, but even a cripple mercenary could find usefulness from time to time. So he traveled Lodoss for years living on one meager job after another until by sheer chance he came to a backwater village named Caena, dirt poor and at the constant mercy of local bandits. My father made weapons and taught the villagers how to fight back, they drove the bandits away forever. When it was time for payment it turned out that the villagers could give him no money, they could barely feed themselves. But they offered him a fair plot of land and a new home, a new life. At first my father spat on the offer and prepared to leave that night, but my mother convinced him to stay with that very song. Or so Ive been told.
Well, thats different, Song said. She thought about what he had said, she didnt like military people. Especially after living with one for most of her life. Hmm, did you like your father? she asked. She didnt really care for either of her parents, then again she had never met them, but what did that matter? Sounds decent, helping people and such, though there isnt much use in that anymore. I find the general public to be rude and heartless, but then, that is my opinion, she said looking at Nessa.
Nessa thought about the question for a moment, he and his father didnt see eye to eye on every subject, especially when it came to Nessas plans in life. As soon as he told his father he wanted to be a solder he got a solid whack to the back of the head and the promise of much more if he ever spoke of it again. Beyond that he wasnt so bad, and as Nessa thought about it he started to realize that he already missed the old bastard.
Yeah, my old man and I got along okay. He even sparred with me a few times. That all changed when I told him I was gonna follow in his footsteps, I begged him for years but he never taught me how to use a sword. The boy suddenly felt a bit self conscious revealing so much about himself, he wasnt quite used to being on the talking side of a conversation. Youre making me talk about myself too much. Where are you from? And whered you get the pegasus?
Me, Im from around, she said looking at the young man. She adjusted her hair over her ears. She would rather been known as a human than a half breed. I was engaged to be married to some noble brat, so I decided to run away from home and never looked back. This pegasus was a gift from my father, she said. She had begun it again, lying. She couldnt help but lie; she hated to talk truthfully about herself. She began to feel bad about it, this was a first. The boy had been so honest with her. Now she was unsure of what to do, she looked over to the boy wondering if he bought it.
Songs origins seemed vague but Nessa didnt think much of it to press the matter. Instead he caught himself staring at Lazorus again, truly an amazing creature.
Song didnt like the way Nessa was staring at Lazorus She motioned for Lazorus to come closer to her. He slowly moved his way over to her. He continued to munch lazily on the grass. She looked at Nessa again with a glare. She was unsure of this guy, maybe he wanted to try and steal Lazorus? Umm, Why are you staring at him like that? She asked looking at Nessa.
Nessas face burned with embarrassment as he was caught staring at the pegasus. Silently and for the thousandth time he cursed at the fact that he was born in such a tiny, backwater town. Had he grown up in Alan he might not have been so surprised at the sight. With all his youthful frustration he hated being the gawking commoner of the group. Im sorry...again, he muttered. But its a little hard not to. Maybe youve seen a lot of flying horses but this is a first for me.
Nope, not a lot of flying horses in Adan, she said, shaking her head to the boy. Sorry for being rude with you. I just dont want you to get the idea in your head to try and steal Lazorus, she said, looking at him. She did wonder if he was pondering stealing her precious friend. She noticed his face turning red, so she assumed she had guessed right he was going to try and steal Lazorus

As the others prepped the camp, Dralock chose a space for himself about four feet wide, set his things down, and began his routine. Clearing his mind, he stood still for a moment, just breathing. Then, with fluid motions, he stepped forward while sweeping his left arm forward and up. He then continued on with a series of motions, each flowing from one into the next, almost like a dance but a bit slower, and much more determined. The entire time, his breathing was in a steady rhythm. When he finished the final stance, Dralock decided to setup his bed roll and wait for Aiyanna and Veriss to return.
Mia and Thalia walked off the road with some of the others in the area that they seemed to generally agree would be camp. Mia didnt care for anything more than a bit of healing at the moment. She sat down on a soft lump of grass and looked up at Thalia almost eagerly. Lucied limped up alongside her and sat down heavily.
Thalia knelt beside the elf and laid a hand on Mias shoulder, casting an uncertain glance at the very large wolf. Holy Marfa, mend this warriors wounds, Thalia prayed. Her hands began to glow with holy light and a comforting warmth spread through Mia, causing the elf to smile contently. Her wounds closed and bruises faded. She also noticed how Thalia had looked at Lucied.
Dont worry about him, hes an old friend. He wont bite, Mia assured the priestess. Thalia nodded and smiled, seeming just a little relieved.
Once she finished healing Mia, she tentatively reached for Lucied, then looked at the elf. Is it...? Mia nodded her ahead and Thalia laid her hands on Lucied and said the same prayer. Lucied didnt even show the slightest hint of discomfort, he just laid his head down in comfort. If he could grin, he would, instead, his tail just gave a little wag.
Mia sighed in relief and leaned back in the grass, observing her companions. It seemed the half-elfs pegasus was reaching out to them, even if the girl was anti-social. Nessa began to sing to it, which Mia could hear quite clearly with her long ears. He had a surprisingly beautiful voice that brought a smile to her face. Between that and the healing, she was starting almost euphoric.
Do any of your companions require healing? Thalia asked.
Im sure Nessa and Dralock could use it...The boy and the dwarf, Mia replied, gesturing toward them.
The young blonde priestess was very beautiful to human standards, but to a dwarf she was scrawny, too tall and not bearded. Her blue eyes expressed an inner beauty that anyone could recognize though; selflessness, innocence, and purity.
Miss Mia told me you might need healing? Thalia offered. Or perhaps a refreshment spell to ease your aches from battle?
Ah, I would be grateful for a refreshment spell, priestess, the dwarf replied.
Thalia smiled brightly and laid her hands on Dralocks shoulder. Holy Marfa, allow your great power to channel through me to heal this warrior, the priestess prayed and her hands glowed with holy light. Dralock was obvious relieved by it. There, do you feel better? Thalia asked when she finished.
Aye, thank you, Dralock said and bowed his head respectfully to her.
Youre certainly welcome, Thalia beamed in reply, then moved on to Nessa and Song.

Aiyanna walked on for awhile before picking up some decent sized branches as she went around the older trees. She rummaged through her backpack and grabbed a small piece of cloth to gather small branches and leaves for kindling. She didnt want to waste her still-recovering mana. I think we need to gather few bigger logs then get back to the camp. I want to cast a protective shield over the camp.
Veriss nodded. If you wish, I can fell a small tree... was all she had to offer. She was no lumberjack, but she thought that her weighted, two-handed sword could do a good deal of damage, close to that of a good-sized ax. She figured that, if need be, she could simply hack down a dead tree and use a part of that for firewood.
Aiyanna nodded, That would be good, it would keep the fire for longer, and before anything else happens to the camp we had better return.
Lady Trelem nodded to the sorceress. Taking down a sapling would not be a problem with the amount of momentum she could bring about. And all of what she said was truth. Veriss thought of telling the woman that magic was not required to start a fire. One could simply rub two of the smaller branches together until they ignited. But argument was not in the best interest of either.
The knight found her target. It was a young tree that probably didnt have room to grow properly. It was easily taller than her, but it was not at all an adult by forest standards. She knew little about growth patterns, but it was far too packed in that spot, she supposed. Stand back for your safety, the warrioress declared in a deep command. With that, both of her armored hands flew to her side. Her hands held the handle for a moment, as if choosing how to draw the blade. As if her hands had decided, they twisted on the handle slightly and drew it up. Her arms were barely long enough to pull the two-handed blade out of its sheath. In the back of her mind, she thought that, after all of its activity, the sword would have to get sharpened.
A strong stance was set into place and Veriss swung her sword back. With all technique included, the sword cut through air and wood. To her surprise, the sword went much farther into the wood than she had expected. She wedged her weapon from the grip of the tree and took the stance once more, delivering one, two, three more cuts into its solid surface. Another cut would be a waste of energy, but it still stood. Barely. Veriss dropped her sword. Timber, she muttered, throwing her right leg out and into the trunk. The metal plating of her armor crashed into the bark, creating a small crater. More importantly, the tree fell down, bumping into the older trees along the way.
Veriss broke off most of the smaller branches and put them atop the pile in Aiyannas arms. They would be in the way and would end up being cut off at camp anyway. The sorceress didnt seem burdened by the wood, so it was easier in the long run. Veriss sheathed her blade, looking over the long, but thin tree, dead before her. Before she could begin to analyze how to carry it, she simply grabbed it and put it on one shoulder. She turned her head to Aiyanna. I think that this is sufficient wood for a camp fire befitting the size of ourselves and our company. I will let you lead the way back to camp.
* * *
Azala, had stationed himself near Mia. Thoughts of seducing the young priestess he was traveling with had subsided, at least, for the time being. Theyre mercenaries eh? I dunno, they seem have seen too few winters, he chuckled, and then petted Lucied. One of the reasons he could never bring himself to buy a horse was because of his particular empathy toward animals. He even felt bad about riding them, primarily because the thought of How would you like having a small child ride on your back for miles? always crossed his mind. He then winced, and turned in the direction Veriss and Aiyanna had headed to for firewood, and his face seemed rather stern. Bloody murderers... he sneered, turning back to Mia. Firewood was one thing, but cutting down a tree in the prime of its life disturbed him a great deal. Dont expect me to act civil to the big one and the sorceress now.
Aiyanna silently walked back with Veriss with the firewood in tow. As they entered the camp site, she looked at the others and dumped the wood in the middle of the camp and began carefully arranging it. She started to rub the two middle sized twigs together and soon enough smoke started to spread and small flame started and rapidly darted all over the smaller twigs around it.
Aiyanna finally looked around and it seemed like a healing session was going on. Her eyes then landed on the new common elf, she felt disturbing feeling radiating from him. If you are concerned about the tree, it was dead tree that we felled, Aiyanna said as she looked at him. She knew elves had good communication with nature and hated when humans cut down living trees especially. If you still want to hate me, thats fine too. Aiyanna then turned around to prepare to cook some soup with the vegetables that she had in her bag and prepared to roast some ham. She was tired, and she couldnt care less if there was a rude elf.
Veriss placed the wood down carefully and hacked it up into a few pieces with her rather large sword for Aiyanna to start a fire with, to which she did. There were a few pieces left over in case the fire began to die out, but she doubted they would. In such a case, she would return the wood to the forest as firewood. She remembered making that mistake before amongst an elf. Dymerriella was quite unhappy with her and yelled at her in quite a harsh tone, perhaps even stronger than her most strict combat trainer. The elf told her that the forest was to be respected and too many humans didnt have that respect. Veriss did not know that elves had such a sensitivity to things such as that before. She did now. She felt nothing for them, but she would attempt to make them comfortable. One of the other deductions Veriss had thought of was that it was nearly impossible for a human to do just that; make them comfortable around them.
Mia wasnt too happy about them having cut down a sapling, but she was a bit more desensitized than Azala. She could still see an aura of life about it. Her instincts were upset about it, but she wasnt going to be outright as petulant as Azala. Even from a human point of view, it wasnt logical to use a sapling for firewood. That trees not dead, Aiyanna. Besides, dont you know that green wood doesnt burn well? Mia stated.
I am a human, and is not ranger or an elf. Unfortunately I cant sense life force like elves do. No, they do not burn well, but I am tired and wasnt prepared to walk miles to find good sized fallen logs. Aiyanna then, whilst setting the soup to boil, spread her bed roll. And I am not in the mood to argue or fight. She took off her her dark gray cloak and neatly folded it. A glimmer of silver hung from her neck on what seemed like shimmering chain. It had luminous blue gem and was enclosed in two wings. Aiyanna gave a quick pat to the necklace then saw to the soup and roasting ham.
Mia rolled her eyes at Aiyannas excuses. Azala, why dont we go gather some fire wood? Mia suggested, though what she really wanted was to chat with her old friend. Maybe make sure he wasnt trying to seduce that innocent young priestess. She stood and brushed herself off, then gave a stretch. Thalias healing was quite thorough and she felt better than she did before the fight.
Aiyanna frowned and sat down to stir the soup as it boiled nicely along. She was hungry, she had to admit; very hungry, in fact. While the soup was bubbling along, she heard Mia was going to find some more firewood. She doubted it, Mia was probably just going to talk privately with her friend.
Eh? Yeah, sure... Azala muttered, half tempted to curse Aiyanna and Veriss for how blasé they were acting after they murdered a tree. Such was a humans way though. Maybe well pick out something dead rather then something thats still alive! he said, a lot more loudly then his first comment. He followed Mia rather grumpily. Still a mercenary huh? And here I thought you would have settled down and had children... many children.

The lovely blonde priestess approached from behind Nessa. Pardon me, she spoke, glancing from Nessa to Song. Would either of you be in need of healing? Or perhaps a refreshment spell?
guessed she was a priestess having one in a Marfa temple once when his brother became so sick he had to be taken many miles to be healed. In his superstitious homeland any magic, even holy magic was met with suspicion at best and outright hostile fear at worst. Though Nessa had to admit that he wasnt quite at full strength, he was still a bit woozy from the blow to his head and shallow cuts riddled his body. Coming from a life of hard farm labor it was nothing he couldnt handle, but if he was to train with Veriss he knew he would need to be healthy enough to get the most out of her lesson.
I guess I could use some healing, he replied with reservation. Just so long as you dont turn me into anything please.
Thalia giggled at Nessa, Dont worry I cant.... the priestess paused in mid-sentence, just noticing the presence of the winged horse. Thalia was frozen in awe for a moment, staring at the strange creature, and likely would upset Song further. Oh my...Ive never seen a pegasus... the priestess mused softly, completely forgetting her duty as a healer.
Greysoul wandered the area with disinterest. He ate some grass, strolled around without any apparent goal, and looked at a few things. But, other than that, the campsite was obviously too boring for an energetic draft horse like him. Then, he caught sight of it. Thats a pretty horse. A very pretty horse, one would imagine he thought. Greysoul stared at it for several minutes. Then, out of nowhere, he started trotting towards it. The long hair on his hooves bounced across his ankles as he did so. He stopped right in front of Lazarus. Greysoul leaned his head towards the pegasus slowly, looking it over closely, His eyes darted around it warily. Greysoul made a full circle around Lazarus, examining the pegasus. He stopped in front of the flying horse again. He leaned his head forward once more and gave a slight whinny at the Pegasus. He wanted a reaction. Greysoul took a glance back to Veriss, who sat, eating. She was still covered in goblin blood and ate slowly. The draft horse went back to this strange other horse. He waited to see what it would do.
Song was getting angry about all these people and other horses moving around Lazorus. Umm, No healing for Lazorus or I. Lazorus noticed the other horses whinny, he turned the other way and began to munch on some grass. Song smiled at Lazorus quite happily, then an idea began to creep into her head. Since so many people seemed amazed by Lazorus.
Well if you want to ride Lazorus, an evil smirk crossed her face as she looked at Thalia, then Nessa. Lazorus swung his head around continuing to munch his grass staring at her. You can as long as you pay for it. Like as in magic spells or potions or weapons or foods or blankets or anything materialistic will do for me, she said with a smile getting up and patting Lazorus. Lazorus glanced at the other horse then continued to eat more concerned with his food then other wild creatures.
Greysoul was not so easy to get up in making friends with this horse. The work horse followed Lazarus around, constantly trying to catch the horses attention. Greysoul had yet to even notice the fact that Lazarus had wings. He just seemed to want to make friends. So he followed calmly, eating grass near Lazarus and paying attention to everything the pegasus did.
Thalias youthful curiosity was definitely interested in riding the pegasus, but she had duties. The young woman he belonged to was very protective of him, Thalia noticed. She watched as the large gray work horse from the group examined Lazorus. Her horse, Nyn, might have wanted to meet the pegasus too, but the mare was tied to a tree closer to the camp.
Thank you for the offer, she told Song, then turned to Nessa and gently laid her hands on his shoulder.
Holy Marfa, allow me to wash the pain and weariness from this warrior with your power, Thalia spoke and her hands began to glow with a soft light. Comforting warmth passed through Nessa, removing his exhaustion and injuries in its wake. Once it finished, Thalia smiled sweetly to him and asked, Are you feeling better now?
Lazorus was attempting to ignore the other horse. Song patted Lazorus on his head. People seemed like they wanted to but they didnt have the courage. Well they were smart because the only person Lazorus allowed on his back was Song. Too bad Song would have had quite a laugh watching him throw off other people.Guess that means theres no takers. Song said looking around jumping up onto Lazoruss back.
Song made the offer to barter goods for a chance to ride the pegasus, Nessa didnt take her up on it. He would have liked to get closer to the animal though he wasnt so enthralled with the it to give up any of his necessary gear, least of all his sword. Beyond that he really had nothing worth trading.
Then Thalia placed her hands on his shoulders to in a healing gesture. The young man braced himself for the worse but instead experienced a euphoric sensation like he had never felt before. In moments he felt completely refreshed as though he had gotten a full nights sleep, the cuts on his arms had disappeared without a trace, as well as the gash at his ribs. Nessa rubbed his finger along his left temple and felt no soreness from when it was smashed by a spear shaft.
That was amazing... he said looking to the priestess. You have some gift there.

I have no urge to socialize, Veriss thought. With that thought still echoing through her heartless head, she walked to the edge of the light. Her muscles ached from battle. The wounds she had complained, but they could not be seen by anyone. The most obvious of the wounds, the pierce wound to her shoulder, was filled in some by the salve, but it certainly did not heal it completely. Veriss covered it up as they left with more chain mail, as well as her less serious injuries. Taking favors was something a warrior and a noble was not used to. Nor did she need to do. She had never liked being healed in the least. If her wounds could close and seal on their own, she preferred it that way. It was natural. All of her wounds were mistakes from battle. They were mistakes that she must pay for. Cheating taught her nothing.
Despite the pain that she felt, she began drilling unarmed combat, should she lose her sword. For her, it was her next planned training session, since she hadnt covered it in over a month. She swung her fist, bringing her other arm to defend an incoming hit from her imagined enemy. She swung her leg back to hit an attacker behind her, then ducked and brought her fist up for a stunning uppercut. After that, she came into a strange rhythm of attacks that required some sort of advanced training to receive. They style in and of itself was altered and it almost turned into a dance of kind. It might have been a show to someone who thought that tall and muscular people could not be graceful. She swung her body around, always moving, bringing synchronized hits out at several enemies, but every hit was always the preamble to another. For minutes, it seemed that this would never end. But it did. Veriss froze in place, leg still in air. She held it there for only two seconds before bringing it down.
Veriss counted her mistakes as she made them. She had made four. That was four knives, swords, arrows, or any such weapon, slashing her, piercing her, or otherwise injuring her in battle. Technically, she could have died, should the combat have been real. She needed to work on it. It was a deadly fighting style to those who were proficient in it, but Veriss could never get some of the moves right. It was for those more lithe than her, but it would not stop her from working on it until it was mastered.
The warrior felt a twinge. She shook her head. The activity had weakened her physically as well as mentally. Her emotion had begun to rise, just slightly. Any movement within her was a problem, no matter how far it was from her breaking point. She immediately sat down, far from the fire. She crossed her legs and closed her eyes, leaving herself in a state of calm and peacefulness. The elves would probably recognize this particular form of meditation. It had been popular among their people for centuries when it came to stress relief and severe emotional struggle. It was a meditation that took the utmost concentration on things far beyond the normal. It took at least a year to learn to do correctly. In the life of an elf, a year was not much to count for. But for a human, it was much more. The appearance of a human doing almost anything rooted in elven tradition was strange to most.

As Mia and Azala walked into the woods, she gave him a playful punch in the arm. Im never settling down, even if I lose both my legs! Ill drag myself away by my arms if itll keep me from getting married and having little brats, Mia replied. Azala knew how she felt about it, not like that would stop him from teasing her about it. So, what about you? Any brats of your own? Ex-lovers trying to marry you so there wont be a bunch of bastard half-breeds running around?
You should really respect your elders and not hit them to much. Azala rubbed his arm, although it was really only a show. He would be the first to admit that his body wasnt as solidly built as a human or dwarfs, but he wasnt that weak. Women? Probably. But I dont stick around any one place for to long. As for kids, I have one that I know of, but the mother seemed to want to bare all that burden herself. But just in case... well, I like not sticking around, just in case. He hopped up to one of the tree branches, and looked down at Mia. So, whats your mission? Your never really were the glory for the light or by the power of the darkness type.
Well, its sort of a dual mission. There was this magic warded post in the guild posted by a sorcerer. He wanted the bravest mercenaries to come to his tower outside the Mirror Forest, rewards of treasure and the like. It was the mention of danger that got me interested. Then I met Aiyanna in the guild, she wants to go to Roid, so well take her there, then go on to the Mirror Forest, Mia explained. All the while, she was looking out for firewood, but it was Spring. Any dead wood on the forest floor was grown over, so she was looking up in the boughs of trees for branches caught on the leeward side.
Sounds like the sorcerer was trying to get as many people as possible then. Always count on some hot-headed youth to take up the mantle of bravest mercenary in Lodoss, Azala said rather absently, leaning against one of the trees, he looked around. The wood looked pretty bad to burn, but it wasnt exactly cold out. Well, I have no real interest in sorcerers or crusades. Im just traveling with the priestess there on a whim, nothing else to it.
Besides adding another notch to your bedpost? Mia replied with a smirk. I bet that innocent little thing will be a challenge, I could see her halo, she chuckled, and leaned against another tree, facing Azala. Mia glanced around the trees again, looking for dead wood. If she went back to camp without wood, Aiyanna might have an I told you so retort waiting. Mia didnt want a human acting as if she knew better than an elf at woodscraft.
I have no idea what your talking about... Azala said with a coy smile. Well, it would be obvious that he was trying to seduce the priestess. Fortunately, he was probably already on Thalias mind, especially since she didnt seem to mind the fact that he had blown on her ear. While humans didnt have quite the sensitive ears that elves had, the effect was probably still similar. Well, halo or not, it was a notch in the waiting.
Hold on a sec, Mia told Azala, then gracefully climbed up into the tree behind her. A few moments later, she was back down with a bundle of dead twigs and branches under her arm. Thisll be enough for our needs, she said with a shrug. Ready to go back?
As Mia climbed down the tree, he calmly flicked a spider off her shoulder. Doing that to spite your companions eh? Dont blame ya. Sorcerers always are a bit to smug for their own good. The warrior probably is so used to stripping areas of wood for fire that its second nature.
Mia chuckled, Im glad you understand.
The elven mercenary turned back down the path they followed in. I hope that man with her isnt a boyfriend. Hes huge...of course, its not like you cant dodge.
That guy? Apparently hes a half dwarf. Azala shuddered lightly at that prospect. He figured that man was lying, and he was indeed a full dwarf, but who knows. Some men liked hairy women apparently. I figure some dwarf got a woman very... very... very drunk, or a man very... very... very drunk to cause that. Dwarves arent exactly known as a fairer race. He pointed to his sword as Mia said the mans ability to fight. I can fight to, and I pride myself at being able to gut someone like a fish before they can even see one coming. If he proves hostile enough, I suppose I could make him realize Im not one to aim an ax at.
Ew... Mia murmured at the thought of a half-dwarf. It was disgusting enough to think of two dwarves making love, but a human whose aesthetic tastes were closer to hers, was a worse concept. Especially with a dwarven woman. Well, to each their own. I didnt get a good enough look to see his aura, but saw enough to know hes as wide as a dwarf, but taller than any Ive seen.

Aiyanna hummed a tune, a very old tune, sort of sad and sweet. A song her mother sang taught to her. It was of a their ancestor who first initiated the contact with the stars in the sky. Anyone feel like dinner? Aiyanna asked everyone around.
Veriss heard the call for food. She had brought no food of her own. The last of her money was spent on Greysoul, who was quite content with that particular concept. He grazed calmly around the campsite, testing the area until he knew it well enough.
The giantess broke her meditation and joined the others around the campfire. I would request a portion of tonights meal, she said quietly to Aiyanna when she asked who wanted food.
Aiyanna served Veriss and said, I hope my cooking isnt too bad. Here, have some water too, Aiyanna poured out a cupful from rather a large water skin.
Thank you, Veriss said quickly. She looked down at the food provided. It was better than military rations could be. Veriss began to eat slowly. To eat quickly made one temporarily sick and, despite the healers that could care for her there, she decided it was wisest to care for herself. Besides, she wanted to reduce the possibility of her remaining injuries. She wanted them there. They were well hidden under her chain mail and interlocking plates, so it would have been impossible to see them. Her manner certainly did not show it either.
Aiyanna walked to Nessa, Song, and Thalia, since they didnt hear her call for dinner where they were at. Priestess, you remind me of my sister, except of course she is at Tarba right now. She is also a priestess of Marfa, Aiyanna said. Time for dinner. She announced, then turned around to offer it to Dralock and looked at Song. Would you like some dinner?
Yes, I would like some dinner, but it all depends on what you are planning on receiving in return, Song had learned nothing was for free when she had first left her home. She highly doubted people were now just going to start giving out food as if it was free. She patted Lazorus then thought about it. You cant have Lazorus for food, she said, almost offended.
Oh? Thalia said to Aiyanna. I might know your sister, what is her name? the priestess asked. And you wouldnt mind terribly if my companions and I shared your dinner?
Oh no Priestess, I dont mind at all. Go ahead and have some. Then looked at the half-elven girl. Not everyone is bad enough to want something in return. Just go ahead and have some. I swear I dont want to hurt your pegasus. I swear it upon the stars. Aiyanna went back to serving those who hadnt eaten yet. My sisters name is Ciel Irisis, Priestess.
Thank you, Thalia told Aiyanna with a smile. She returned to the campfire with Aiyanna and the others, graciously taking the food the sorceress served. Once that was taken care of, Aiyanna continued their conversation. Thalia was indeed familiar with Ciel, they were around the same age and had some lessons together in Tarba. Yes, I do know Ciel! Thalia replied. We had some lessons together. She should be taking her pilgrimage soon, I do believe. Im so surprised to meet the sister of one of my sister priestesses!
Veriss said nothing. She ate. She had nothing else to do. Her drilling she decided to cut short for the night. Greysoul hadnt seemed to give up trying to make friends with the Pegasus. The giantess wasnt planning on trying to stop him either. As long as it was harmless, she saw no reason in stopping him. The warrioress cleaned her plate. She left it on her lap and sat there with that same, empty face.
Thank you, said Song as she jumped off her horse. She took the plate slowly, then she rushed back to Lazorus, hiding her food so no one would try and steal it from her. She sat beside her pegasus and ate. She split everything into thirds. She ate one third of that then she gave the rest to Lazorus then tucked the rest of the food into her pouch. She patted Lazorus on the side of his head, then took out a little carving and continued on with that occasionally glancing over at the others. Lazorus gave a large angry sounding whiny to the other horse.
This one is strange, Veriss thought, considering Song. She wondered why the girl stayed around. Song certainly didnt trust anyone there. The girl didnt agree with the rest of the group. It would be classless to come out and say something, so she decided to keep quiet.
Veriss stood up. She wanted to do something. She needed to work. Thank you, Veriss stated simply, placing the plate down besides Aiyanna before walking off. The giantess dropped to her knees and fell chest first into the ground. She put one hand solidly on the earth next to her and began to lift herself. Her muscles bulged as she slowly pushed her own weight up with only one arm. Even in the face of such struggles, her eyes and face were truly made of stone. All that could be heard from her was her staggered breathing, keeping a rhythm with her lifts. One by one, her push ups continued. Her arm slowly began to shudder from the stress, but she did not stop. Under her breath, she was counting.
Mia and Azala stepped out of the forest to find their companions eating dinner. Mia dropped her bundle of firewood on top of the green wood, then went to the cook pot to serve herself some of the last of Aiyannas stew.
No dead wood when you guys went in there eh? Azala said in a biting tone, making it perfectly obvious that he had a great dislike of murdering the trees. Gee, I guess we elves are just more lucky then two humans. Or maybe we just arent blind to dead branches and limbs. Grabbing some of the stew, he kept his distance from the fire. He knew that Salamander spirits would dance there, but he wasnt fond of them. He had no great disdain for them, but fire had limited purposes being just being able to destroy.
Veriss did not respond. One of her focuses in training after her incident was to harness her temper. She could not respond. She wanted to. But she couldnt. It could become out of control. She felt nothing about it, but trained herself to realize when to speak up. It was selective situations. It was how she survived in society.
Yeah, we were blind if thats the answer you want hear. And definitely not enough dead wood and twigs to gather. Aiyanna was almost at her limit of her temper. That was almost an insult to human race and the limited abilities of being a human. Please inform me when everyone is done with dinner, I am off to meditate in a quieter corner, Aiyannas voice showed straining on her temper. She didnt want to snap right now, especially when she only had half of her mana supply. Aiyanna sighed, trying to calm her temper from breaking and walked away to outer limits of their camp and sat down cross legged. She murmured few words then spread her hand gently and a glowing silverish blue ghostly magical ring shone and glowed. Its design was intricate, four outer rings had Kastuulian words written all around and in the middle was many pointed star. Breathe...Aiyanna...breathe and calm...
Moving by Thalia, Azala whispered in her ear. Are you planning to head with them, or to continue on your way? He made sure to blow on it slightly as he said this, although he didnt go quite as far as to nibble on her earlobe... that, he would do later.
Thalia sat up suddenly as Azala blew on her ear. During the ride, his advances were pushing the limits of flirtation, but now it had crossed to harassment. Azala, I would appreciate if you would refrain from seducing me! Thalia insisted in a harsh whisper. To answer your question, we will continue with them if they wish to have our company.
My dear priestess, shouldnt it be attempt to seduce you? Azala stated with a purely innocent smile, like one a wolf would have before it attacked the sheep. Besides, where is the fun without it? You should be used to it by now, your quite the beautiful woman. But... I will refrain.. for now anyway.
Azala looked over at Mia. She is apparently the leader, so I suggest you ask her first. I wont imagine shell say no, but you never know. Mercenaries tend to welcome priests and priestesses, as a great many lack the ability to heal beyond typical first aid. Just know this; If you go with them, youll see a great deal more blood then I would wager youve ever seen before. Mercenaries walk the path of destruction, priestess.
Mia watched Aiyanna as the sorceress went into meditation. She could understand why Azala was upset, but Aiyanna didnt seem to understand him enough. Mia was desensitized to death, she had more experiences with it than she cared to remember. She couldnt concern herself much with the death of a sapling. However, what could she say between those two? She had a job to do, Aiyanna was her employer, and Mia didnt want to put that in jeopardy. But what could she say to Azala? If she told him that, he would ask if a mercenary contract was more important than the life of a young tree. Mia decided it was best to stay out of it, and keep Azala and Aiyanna apart.
Lucied, who had spent most of the evening napping near the fire, rose and gave his coat a shake. He wasnt interested in cooked food, he was no dog, he was a wolf, and ate what he killed with his own teeth. With barely a glance of question between him and Mia, he walked out of the camp and into the forest to find his supper.
Mia caught a little of Thalia and Azalas conversation. She chuckled as Thalia asked him to refrain from seducing her. He was trying too hard, maybe he wasnt used to girls with as much willpower as this priestess. Usually, human girls were falling into his lap, literally.
Priestess, if you want to travel with us, you should ask Aiyanna, Mia told Thalia, and directed her to the meditating sorceress. Im sure wed appreciate your company, its up to her though. Mia looked at her companions around the campfire. We need to decide a guard rotation for the night. Who wants to take first watch?
I will, Veriss said swiftly. What she said, from what anyone could pick up from her intonation, meant that it was a fact, not an offer. Veriss would take first watch. She had need of rest, perhaps more so than the others, but that was a weakness she could fight against. Her outward appearance did not register such effects as lack of energy. Without further word, she continued what she normally did. She trained, but not in the way most did. She drew her sword and balanced it in one hand. Her legs were positioned before her as she held out the sword to nothing. The sword she wielded was much heavier than most, which made it all the more deadly in the arms of someone with such titanic strength as Veriss had. Her arm twitched as the sword began to gradually feel heavier and heavier. Her focus was as strong as her arms, though.
Had Veriss given Mia a chance to protest, the elf would have insisted that she sleep. Mia, Dralock, and Nessa had all been healed and refreshed by Thalia, Veriss hadnt, and Mia know she was injured. Fine, Ill take second watch. Mia said with a shrug. Wake me after your shift, but if you dont wake me for watch, Im sending you back to Alan! Mia called to Veriss as the woman exercised. She didnt expect a reply, she made her point clear and Veriss had no need to respond. Though Veriss kept a tight hold on her emotions, Mia could tell that the berserker did have a measure of pride that kept her from showing weakness. Regardless, Veriss needed rest and they couldnt afford to have her wounded and tired the next day. Dralock, youll be third, and if necessary, Nessa gets final watch.
Mia picked up her pack and stood. Im going to go clean up and look for a creek in the area. I suggest everyone do the same. Weve all got some goblin blood on us and, if not for hygiene, for safety, we should clean up. If any of the women here want to join me, we should go together for modestys sake.
Aiyanna silently got up and said, I will go with you. She then broke her magical circle and gathered her things. She will have to change her clothing since of the goblins had slashed one of the sleeves of the outer tunic. Aiyanna waited to see if anyone else was coming.
Mia nodded to Aiyanna and looked toward the woman knight training herself further. Veriss, are you going to come clean up? Mia asked, half-expecting the warrior to refuse. The reason to bathe should make perfect sense to the berserker who kept her emotions tightly under control. They didnt need to attract unwanted attention with the stink of goblin blood.
The giantess put her sword down, as if it just occurred to her that Mia was even speaking to her. Bathe... It was a good idea. At the very least, she needed to wash off her armor and undergarments. Dried blood, she had learned previously, tended to ruin underclothes and wound disease she did not need either. The concept of showing her remaining wounds to the others was not appealing to her, since Aiyanna showed a zeal for healing potions. If she had to threaten the sorceress to keep her evidence of mistakes, then that would do it.
I do require bathing, she announced, rising. Blood was spread across her chest plate as if a painter had attempted to wash her armor with it. With a wide movement, she swung her abnormally large sword into her sheath. She made swinging the blade around look easy. She stood tall, like a statue. I am ready to go now.
Mia nodded as Veriss joined them, then looked to Song, though she didnt think the half-elf would want to leave her precious pegasus. Mia noticed how protective shed been of him since they arrived.
The priestess Thalia stood and went toward them. I will go with you, she said. Mia had the feeling the girl wanted to get away from Azala. Mia nodded in acknowledgment as Thalia moved beside Aiyanna. Thalia had yet to ask to join, so now she did. The priestess didnt really need to bathe, but she wanted to talk to the group leader and get away from Azala. Milady Aiyanna, I would like to humbly request to join your quest, Thalia began as they waited. I am on my first mission from Tarba, and I would like to offer my skills as a healer. All I ask is that you allow my guard, Avion, to accompany as well.
Aiyanna smiled tiredly, maybe her mood ruined by the rude elf might get better. Of course priestess, I have no objection. Just long as we all get along. As if to emphasize particular elf, she glared at Azala. Then turned back, It will be most welcomed for as to have a healer, since I am bad at healing apart from minor cuts and wounds. Then shall we go? Aiyanna looked around at other female companions.
Nessa sat quietly to himself throughout most of the evening, he felt no words to share and no stomach to eat. His thoughts kept returning to Jonas despite attempts to focus on something else, though Azalas rejection gave him an audible chuckle. He knew it was useless but he kept replaying the day in his head, trying to figure out how things could have gone differently. And then Mia suggested that they all bath in the river, he had barely realized that he was covered in goblin blood as well as a generous amount of his own. The boy then shifted uncomfortably when he realized that it had congealed and dried hours ago.
Mia nodded to Aiyanna and turned into the woods, taking the lead. She wasnt sure if there even was a source of water nearby, but the area was fertile and it was spring. It was likely they could at least find a seasonal stream coming from the mountain snow melts.
Thalia followed the elf, walking alongside Aiyanna. She had noted the sorceresss glare and sharp comments directed at Azala. Azala, hes not really a companion of mine, we just met him on the road earlier. Hes not obligated to me, Thalia said. She hoped Azala wouldnt stay with her much longer, but it seemed he wasnt going to leave until he got what he wanted from her.
As they left the light of the fire, the forest was nearly pitch black to the womens unadjusted eyes. Mia paused for a moment and spoke a soft incantation. A tiny ball of light seemed to seep out of the trunk of a nearby tree to join the group. And as they walked further, a few more will-o-wisps joined them.
Thalia stared in wonder at the mysterious little light spirits. She thought she had seen them before over the course her life, when she was away from cities and towns, but they never stayed around this long.
Its fine priestess, not your fault or anything. But it would be nice not to be hated for being a human. Anyways, if he makes a move you can tell me, I will make sure he doesnt think about it again. Aiyanna smiled lightly at the priestess. Ah...I wonder if there is a water source nearby...
Azala doesnt hate you because youre human, Mia interjected on behalf of her friend. Hes no racist, in case you didnt see the moves he was putting on innocent little Thalia here.
Thalia blushed as she was mentioned. She had no reason to be ashamed, it was Azala who was seducing her, she was just doing her best to block his advances. If anything, she hoped he would part ways with the group, he was being a bit too aggressive for comfort.
Mias right ear twitched upward and she made a sharp turn in that direction. Her spiritual senses were leading her to a strong concentration of Undine spirits.
The will-o-wisps made Veriss uncomfortable. The constant motion always attracted her keen eyes in the night, constantly looking for threats. She hoped the elf would just find the water so they could wash and return. It would soon be too dark and the watch would need to begin. The warrioress ignored the chatter of the priestess and the elf. Before then, Veriss had only met one elf, who was nice enough. She had taught Veriss all about her condition and what could help it, along with what could make it worse. She never felt comfortable around elves. They were too fragile in their ways for someone blunt like Veriss. Priests were the same way.
Aiyanna did not reply to Mia, instead walked a little ahead parting under growth of the forest to find a small sized stream not far ahead. She could just glimpse the reflections of the water. Aiyanna swept her hand over the crystal orb resting on top of her staff to light it up in moon pale light. I think we have found our quarry, Aiyanna said as she waited patiently.
Ah, here we go, Mia stated proudly. The will o wisps still hovered near by, then spread around the creek to give the women good lighting. Mia walked to the bank and set down her bag, then began undressing. She didnt have the energy to make it a comfortable bath, so there was no heating the water, or using spirits to clean the clothes.
The elf walked into the stream once she was undressed, and it immediately became obvious that the water was cold. Shivering, Mia glanced over her shoulder and said, Well, the waters not fine, but its better than goblin blood in your hair.
Thalia had no need to bathe, she only joined them to talk to Aiyanna and escape Azala. The priestess sat on a rock beside the stream and smoothed her robes over her legs. She wanted to learn more about her new companions; since she was with them, she might as well strike up conversation. I am curious, Lady Aiyanna, where does your journey take you?
Aiyanna smiled up at the priestess as she undressed. Ah to Roid, priestess. My brother is a merchant from Moss and he trades in Roid for about two to three months at this time of the year. Since he is busier then usual, I decided to visit him instead the other way around. What about you priestess?
Aiyanna finally undressed and tested the water, it was cold. The only thing Aiyanna didnt take off was a necklace with a wing shaped pendent and arm bracelet in shape of swirling galaxy of stars. Both seemed to glow in soft moon glow in the fading light.
Veriss took herself out of the way and to the side. She put a considerable distance between the others and herself before she began to remove her clothing. She pulled off the armor, which seemed alright. The damned red spot where her own blood had flown freely from a pierce wound had grown. She had secured it with nothing more than a balled-up piece of cloth. She unlatched the various pieces of armor, including her sword. It was all placed down neatly, one by one, until she was completely naked. There was still a deep stab wound in her shoulder. While it had stopped bleeding, it was obvious, even from a distance.
The giantess walked into the water. The chillness of the water struck her, but, like pain, she refused to give it attention. The cold was simply a surrounding affect, and did not bother her statuesque personage. She used the water methodically, washing every area of importance, but not touching any of the others. She realized that she owned no separate clothes at this point. Her last set had been damaged beyond repair and she had no money to replace them. Luckily, little of the battle left lasting on effects on her last outfit. She washed meticulously, carefully covering what needed to be covered. She spent most of the time on her shoulder wound. Much of the dry blood was lifted from her chest, revealing it to be a stab wound from a sword that was healing well. It was because of this wound that Veriss attempted to face away from the other women as much as possible. She did not want the attention. Although it hurt to move her arm, she did it as if the wound was not present. Returning to her items, she gathered up her armor and washed that. As much as she wanted to do the same for her clothes, she could not risk sickness. Instead, she scrubbed the spots that needed the most attention and left it as it was.
Thalia had no need to bathe, she only left the camp to talk to Aiyanna and escape from Azala. The priestess sat on a boulder along the bank, carefully arranging her robes over her knees. Well, Im taking my first mission through Lodoss. I have no destination, I just plan to travel for the next year before returning to Tarba, Thalia replied to Aiyanna. I have no other obligations, so I am free to join whomever I wish to travel with.
Thalia glanced at Veriss while the warrior undressed down stream and she noticed the wound on her shoulder. She knew Veriss was wounded when they first met, but she didnt seem to want healing. Oh my, Thalia said, and made a move to get up. However, Mia shook her head.
I dont think she wants the attention, the elf said while scrubbing at blood stains on her vest. Veriss had made it obvious she wasnt interested in healing, but if she were wounded, it put the party at risk. She was a crucial fighter who could absorb most of the damage and deal out the mostalong with Dralock. If she were to develop an infection or if the wound encumbered her, that would leave the entire burden of that role on Dralock while they passed through the mountains. Ill talk to her, we cant have a wounded warrior when we pass through the mountains, Mia said as she continued to scrub blood out of her leather clothes.
Veriss made no note of anything anyone else did. By this time, she had moved on to washing the blood off of her armor and the connecting chain mails that connected her armor. The set had been built as a last order before she departed her home. It provided maximum ability for handling and minimum restrictions against activity. As a warrior of her stature and skill, it was a valuable commodity that regular armors just couldnt provide.
Mia didnt do anything right away. Once she finished washing herself and scrubbing her clothes, she emerged from the water and began digging in her pack. She had extra clothes, though they werent the sort anyone who knew her would expect her to wear. Mia donned a gauzy cream colored elven blouse that left her shoulders exposed, and a long, matching skirt. Appearing much more the elf than usual, she graceful strode to where Veriss was bathing and sat cross legged on the bank. I saw that wound on your shoulder, she told Veriss, striking up conversation.
Veriss was unsure of how to respond. She was knowledgeable in etiquette, but what did Mia want? No , but that would make her appear less than worthy to fight at the elfs side. She could lie and say it came from something else, but that would make her appear more of a fool. She could tell the woman another lie: that she did not feel like conversing at that moment. Unfortunately, this was an elf she spoke to. She doubted that an elf could not tell her affliction or not understand its effects. Perhaps Mia was concerned for her well being?
It is nothing to concern yourself with, Veriss said sternly, without even looking at Mia. She continued to scrub her platings, her eyes searching out specs of dried blood that she missed on her first sweep.
Im afraid it is, Mia replied just as sternly. Im sure you have your reasons for not seeking healing. Maybe its to prove that you can do just fine on your own. Maybe you want to keep it as a badge of courage. Whatever the reason, keeping that wound unhealed is a jeopardy to the group, especially when we have a capable healer. Its just not logical. No matter how well you clean it, Lucied would be able to smell it, and so would any other predator we encounter in the mountains. Not to mention the risk of infection. You and Dralock are the most powerful fighters here, we need you healthy. The Central Mountains are no stroll in the woods, after all. Mia hoped her monologue got the point across to Veriss. The warrioress had to keep her emotions tightly under control, so she would let logic lead her. However, Mia knew that there was an underlying proud streak in her. The elf could only hope Verisss logic would override her pride.
In my current condition, I will be able to handle combat without complication. I will fight off any predators that appear, Veriss said, placing the last plate of her armor. She walked away quietly to the rest of her things and threw on her chainmail. One by one, she began to replace and lock in the different assembled armor pieces.
Oh, so youll just draw the predators straight to us, Mia said, rolling her eyes. Mia would have preferred they traveled with Veriss healed and deal with as little complications along the way as possible, instead of counting on her to defend them from any creatures that came following her blood scent. There were plenty of reasons for her to be healed, despite Verisss objections. What if she were injured worse when those predators attacked? What if her wound became infected? Mia wasnt going gamble Aiyanna and the others lives on the hope those possibilities wouldnt occur. But Mia figured she should hear Verisss reason to refuse healing. Mia sighed, fingers pressed to the bridge of her nose in frustration. Will you tell me why you dont want to be healed?
Veriss let out a long breath and closed her eyes for a moment. She opened her eyes and looked back at Mia, letting their eyes lock in place. Those two voids of color and frigid temperature. Then, she spoke. Every wound I take is the price I pay for a mistake in battle. If I do not suffer for my own flaws, I will be prone to make the same mistakes. Slowly, my skills as a warrior will diminish, until I am not worth hiring. Only by this process can I take myself to a new level of competence. It is a practice I have followed my entire life. Never has it attracted wild animals. I have fought with far worse injuries before. You have nothing to concern yourself with.
No means to interrupt your little conversation there but we will take what Veriss says for now, but if we are in any sort of grave danger I will not hesitate to take actions, Aiyanna said as she changed from light colored clothing to high necked, sleeveless dark blue tunic and light blue pants. Then pulled on her knee high leather boots. Come on, lets get some sleep and make sure the camp site is in one piece.
Veriss had not expected an intervention, but it was better that Aiyanna did. She did not want to argue or clash with any other member of their group. If her practices caused a problem, she would not practice it. But it did not. Her wounds would heal naturally. Should an infection come about, like they said, there were healers on hand who could be there to assist her. But aid was not necessary then. Very well, Miss Aiyanna, Veriss said, latching her sword into place on her belt.
Yes maam, Mia said to her employer. Veriss had good reasons, but Mia was still concerned with what could happen. Aiyannas compromise would satisfy her. The elf turned away and picked up her belongings, leading them back towards the path. The priestess hopped off her rock and followed.
There wasnt any need to talk on the way back, the women just returned to camp quickly and quietly, guided by Aiyannas staff light. They emerged from the woods into the camp where the men were silent as well. The fire was burning well, apparently someone had kept themselves occupied by tending it.
Alright boys, your turn. Ill lead you to the creek, Mia said, tossing her backpack on her blankets. The elf laid her leather clothes on the ground. Seeing her dressed in a skirt and feminine elf clothes had to be a surprise to Azala.
Nessa shifted again in his armor that was soaked in congealed blood, happy with the chance to wash it off. And with the exertion of the day he probably didnt smell too well either. The young man made a quick sniff under his arms and sure enough there was a smell more potent than his usual musk. He then got up to follow Mia, trying hard not to stare at her in her skirt but falling a hair short of success.
Song continued to sit on the ground with Lazorus standing over her looking up. They all went to take baths. Should we have a peek-see? She asked looking up at Lazorus. The horse just put his head down and began to graze. Well youre no fun, Song said sitting back crossing her arms grunting. She fell back into his leg he didnt seem to care. He noticed the others coming back into camp. Song didnt seem to care as she pulled a piece of wood out of her pack and began to carve. She snuck to woodwork back into her bag slowly climbing up onto Lazoruss back. Lazorus was coaxed into following after the group that was leaving.
Aiyanna put her folded dirty clothing into a leather pouch that hung from her back pack. Gently, she gave the fire a little touch to burn hotter without more wood. These roads were dangerous but also cold. Are you going somewhere? she asked Song as she noticed the half-elven girl leaving. Its more dangerous at night.
Veriss turned her head to Song, attempting to leave the camp. To Veriss, Song wasnt really a member of the group, so she could leave as she pleased. She made no real attempt to become anything closer than an observer and she certainly was not hired, as the warrioress was. If Song never came back, Veriss would not put out any concern for her location or well-being.
Dralock stood and joined Nessa and Mia. Ill be joinin ya, the dwarf said. Hed cleaned his ax and armor a bit while they waited for the women to return, now he just had to take care of the dried blood caked on his skin, hair, and clothes.
Mia watched curiously as Song rode towards them on her pegasus. She raised her eyebrow, but well, it was up to Song if she wanted to bathe with the men, or whatever she was up to. Well, lets go, Mia said, then led Nessa and Dralock into the woods. Dralock, you can see well enough in the dark? I dont really want to bug the spirits anymore for light.
The dwarf nodded. Just stick close, if ye cant see, lad, he told Nessa.
Nessa didnt reply but the offer was welcome. His youthful days were spent in open fields under a scorching sun, it left him with less than stellar night vision. Certainly inferior to the dwarfs.
Oh well danger happens. Toodles for now, Song said over her shoulder to Aiyanna. Song rode slowly behind them looking all around. Maybe there was wood she could use for a new carving. If not maybe somebody had dropped some gold or something that she could sell.
I can see perfectly fine, Song said not caring whether or not they were asking her. She patted Lazorus on the side of the neck. The pegasus walked slowly after the group watching. He stepped lightly not wanting to get any more attention drawn to him like it had earlier.
What a strange person. Aiyanna remarked as she pulled out a wide almost flat dish. She poured a little of her water onto it and murmured several words before it glowed silvery blue briefly at tip her fingers. The waters rippled and turned milky before becoming clear with a vision. It was a vision of the night sky, Aiyanna watched them as they moved or rather heard the rhythm they made. It was a perfect way to spend her spare time before others returned.

Mia led them through the woods, following a path of upturned duff on the forest floor from where she had passed with the women. They arrived at the stream, which was faintly lit by the moon reflecting off the water. Hopefully by now, Nessa could see enough to find the water.
Here ya go, knock yourselves out, the elf said, gesturing to the water. Once they found it, Mia gave Dralock a wave and headed back to camp.
Nessas eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness and could at least see the river and identify certain silhouettes. Once Mia was out of sight the boy began unhinging the uncomfortable armor and breathed a heavy sigh of relief to be out of his clothes which were caked with congealed blood.

Thalia gave Azala a wide berth and sat down close to Avion. Well be traveling with them. They need a healer, she told him.
Used to being dirty, Avion was watching leaving to take baths and changing of clothing. He, himself, just pulled off his tunic top and shrugged. He looked at Thalia who sat near him and smiled lightly. ...You dont like him, do you? There was little guess who he was. Without waiting for her answer Avion stared up at the sky and sighed. What will our path hold for us Thalia? Will I even understand why Im so different? As if to accent his question, the rune on his arm flickered its pale blue light into the night. He cast a glance at it. Its useful actually. I dont know what Id do if it was taken away from me.
Avion fell silent for a long moment. Weve gained a lot of people now. I guess I can relax some. Im not a very good fighter, sad to say. Im pretty useless. All I can do is run in and smash things. He had to chuckle, it made him sound more like an ogre than...well...whatever he was. You know...I think hes acting like a complete fool. I dont know how any woman can find him alluring. He has looks, but no substance to his person. Hes like a bull in mating season...
The half-dwarf sighed again. Hed been uncommonly quiet for a while now and this was the first time hed actually spoken since the others joined the group. Or rather, they join the group. So...you said, a while back, that I was like a dwarf, yet my dads a human. I still cant understand being a half-dwarf. Im an over-built human. I cant use magic...I dont think. I cant wield a weapon worth a copper coin... And Im completely out of my world. But...I suppose everyone started from nothing. I wonder what the future holds for me.
Thalia let Avion speak, listening to everything he had to say despite the fact he was rambling and jumping from one subject to another without allowing her to respond. It was good to hear him talk after he had been silent for most of the day. Thalia could understand if he felt shy around these strangers. The priestess giggled softly at his comments about Azala, then laid her hand on his arm.
You shouldnt worry too much about your place, youll find it, Thalia assured him. You have Marfas blessings. Maybe one of these warriors will help you learn to fight better. The dwarf, or maybe the big woman, Veriss. You should talk to them tomorrow. Now, have you been sitting here brooding on those thoughts all night? Thalia asked, smiling her warm and honest smile.
Mia returned to the campsite alone, having left Dralock and Nessa at the creek to bathe in relative privacy, unless Song was going to peek in on them. Mia wasnt going to stop the half-elf, it wasnt her job to keep a tag-along girl in line in a situation like this. As she walked into the campsite, she shot a glare at Azala, knowing that he had to have some snide comment about her wearing a dress.
The elf sat down cross-legged on her bedroll, picked up her daggers and started to clean the dried goblin blood off.
Well, I havent been brooding, per-say. They arent dark thoughts for the most part. I guess its just my confusion that takes me. It just feels odd, if you get where Im coming from. Avion looked down at Thalias hand on his arm and smiled softly. He looked up and nodded to Mia. My personal feelings really should stay out of this, but...I dont like Azala. Something about him just seems to set me on the alert. Like being around a bull. Hes hard to read.
He fell silent for a long moment and finally spoke again, When I learn to fight...Id like it to be with all weapons I can get my hands on. I want to understand it all. Id really like to be versatile. Besides, I cant be your guard if I cant fight. He smiled at Thalia. He looked at Mia again, it wasnt in the way Azala would be leering at her, it was natural curiosity. Uh...Mia...how long have you been traveling? I mean...well...I dont know how to ask correctly. How long have you been fighting?
Aiyanna stopped reading and gathered her things neatly beside her bed roll. Good night everyone. Aiyanna then paused and looked at her items. With a small murmur, they shimmered lightly as a magical veil settled over them. She then comfortably settled herself for the night.
Oh, bout three hundred years Ive been fighting, Mia casually replied, again making it obvious she didnt care what humans thought of her age, unlike most elves. But Ive been traveling for only about eighty. Of course, to a human, only about eighty was longer than most of them lived.
The common elf had first seen Mia in the dress, and had been able to restrain himself. He was primarily listening around at the conversations around the camp, his ears twitching every now and then to change who he was picking up. He resented the male bull in heat remark, but didnt pay it to much mind. That was the half-dwarfs prerogative to think that way, and the boy, or man, he wasnt sure, dwarves were hard to age, was entitled to his own opinion. When Mia came back, however, he couldnt hold it in anymore, and suddenly burst out laughing.
A... A dress! Oh dear gods, thats just so funny! Mia in a dress is like seeing a goblin in clothes of nobility! He laughed, holding his sides in mock pain. When he was done, he wiped the proverbial tear from his eye, even though there was none, and gave a sheepish grin at Mia. There, Im done for a while...until I can think of more comments for that dress anyway... heh heh...Mia in a dress... thats just to rich...
Without missing a beat, Mia took her metal flask from the pack beside her and hurled it at Azalas head. Go to sleep, was all she had to say as she went back to wiping down her blades. The flask made an audible thud against the elfs skull and Azala went limp in his bed. Mia looked to the unconscious elf and stared wide-eyed for a moment. Oops... She didnt think shed actually do it. Umm...Thalia maybe you should heal him...in the morning. What a strange twist of luck, eh?
Thalia stared at Azala over Avions shoulder and nodded to Mia. At least she wouldnt have to worry about him tonight. She really didnt want to hear what hed say if he woke up to her kneeling over him. Besides, he seemed to be breathing just fine.
Im going to go to bed, Thalia said and stood, then leaned down and gave Avion an innocent peck on the cheek. Goodnight, Avion. And Mia. The priestess laid out her bedroll next to the fire and kicked off her shoes before climbing into the blankets.
Veriss had been meditating, although it was a task to do when flasks flew threw the air and talk of goblins dressed like nobility were only feet away. It was a test to her concentration, which she passed, but not without effort. When people started to prepare for bed, she ended her relaxation techniques. The job of guard was hers to do. She stood up and found a rock to sit on, near the fire. That way, she was not sitting on the ground and she could easily see things around her. She did not yawn or sigh the entire time. She kept alert, since the feeling of boredom never crossed her. At the appointed time, Veriss would wake the next person, as ordered, and get some sleep. As much as it was tempting to keep guard the entire night, she knew just as well as everyone else that it was necessary for warriors to sleep, so that they were fit for battle later on.
After his bath, Nessa returned to the camp to see many of the others preparing to turn in. He also saw Azala laying down in what couldnt be natural sleep, after his comments to the priestess Nessa could only guess that he hit a nerve with one of the ladies. No one seemed terribly concerned so Nessa kept his mouth shut. Instead his mind centered on disappointment that he didnt have time to beg a sword lesson from Veriss, but he had to admit that he was tired, and since she by far fought harder than Nessa she probably needed rest even more. It was still a ways to Roid, perhaps he would get his lesson the next day.
The boy then found a spot to sit down and examine his sword, figuring that his sloppy strikes and parries had left it dull and nicked. But when Nessa ran his fingers along the edge he gave a soft yelp as metal entered his flesh. The young man held up the sword to see that it was just as sharp and flawless as it was that morning. A fine sword indeed yet Aiyanna so carelessly gave it away to a stranger, such odd company he had found himself in. With nothing more to do the boy laid a blanket on the ground and surrendered himself to troubled sleep.
Dralock returned with Nessa and prepared his bed next to the fire. Nearly everyone except Song had returned, but well, the half-elf wasnt exactly a member of the group. Mia felt the urge to make sure everyone safely returned, but that was Verisss job for the next couple hours. The elf put aside her concerns and slipped into her blankets. After such a long day, she fell asleep quickly, though as usual for her, it would be one shed easily rouse from.
