Back Down to Lodoss

Gabriel's young wings ached. His first flight had carried him out of Alan and the winds carried him south a few miles out of the city. He flew until his wings cramped up and sent him spiraling toward the earth. Gabriel had landed in a wooded area, which was lucky, since before he hit the earth, he could slow his decent by grabbing onto the trees. He was so weak though, that he ended up falling to the ground from a tree instead of climbing down. Now he sat on the forest duff, leaning against a tree with limp wings. His wings were relaxed, but pulsed with pain.

Gabriel groaned and leaned his head back and shut his eyes. "Oh Falis..." he moaned. "Maybe mother was right. Damnit, they weren't doing much to help the princess. Just sitting around and talking," Gabriel murmured to himself. "I've got no bloody clue where she could be."

After a rest in the woods, Gabriel wrapped his wings around him and covered himself with his cloak, then trudged out to the road. He didn't have a clue where he was, but he kept walking south, away from Alan.

Finally, he saw lights down the road from a tiny village, more a pit-stop on the road to Alan. As he came closer, he could hear the town was quite busy for this time of night. There was obviously some sort of party going on there.

Gabriel continued onward.

Kira was gleefully enjoying the party in the little village she stopped at. It was the wedding day of the mayor's daughter and the festivities had been carrying on all day. She was tired of all the dancing, so now she sat at a table in the town's bustling inn, eating dinner while her toe tapped along to the beat of the music being played. The wedded couple had long since retreated to their new home, but the town was still partying.

Luckily, the townsfolk were kind to her, despite the fact she was so different with her half-elf ears. They were already in high spirits and old fears of new and different people were starting to fade. In the last war twenty years before, a number of half-elves made a name for themselves, not to mention a number of interracial couples were formed beyond the well-known pairing of Deedlit and Parn--now Alania's king and queen. That didn't mean they were approving of a half-elf princess though. The simple fact of her long life-span was intimidating. Kira was simply a traveler, a pretty little half-elf girl with a friendly nature. Some of the village boys in about their twenties eagerly pulled her out on the floor to dance earlier in the day.

Kira happened to be glancing toward the door when it swung open to admit someone new. Now this stranger certainly stood out. Another half-elf, which was enough to get Kira's full attention. At first, she couldn't be quite certain if the new half-elf were male or female, the features were so delicate and beautiful, but the clothing revealed that it was man--or more of a boy. He wasn't very tall, but he stood out much more than she did. His skin had a darker cast to it, and his eyes were a striking shade of orange. Possibly half-dark elf?

Gabriel scanned the busy common room of the inn, hoping to find the innkeeper so he could get a meal in him. Possibly rent a room for the night and let his wings heal a bit overnight. Gabriel's eyes fell on another half-elf, a pretty girl with auburn hair and green eyes, who was watching him closely. When he noticed her, she exuberantly waved him over.

For a moment, Gabriel debated if he should go over to her or not, and finally decided to. What could it hurt? He pushed his way through the crowd.

"Excuse me," he murmured as he squeeze by a couple.

"Oh, sorry miss," the man dancing said and moved aside. His partner cocked her head to the side and studied Gabe as he walked by. Gabe turned his head down so his hair would cover his face.

Finally, he reached the half-elf's table and slipped into the seat. "Who are you?" he asked in a low voice.

"Kira," she replied. "Just who are you and what are you doing here in that high-class get-up?" she said in reference to his clothes. They looked as if he just stepped out of...wait, there was supposed to be a ball in Alan tonight for heroes of former wars. Kira first heard about it through Alni's letters to Katela, then word of it was all over this area of Alania.

Gabriel regarded Kira for a moment, debating just how much to tell her. Well, she was just a little half-elf girl. What harm could she be, she looked like such an innocent girl. "Gabriel Redricks," he replied. "I was at a ball in Alan, and the princess Ailil was kidnapped. I was going to find her, but now...I'm lost. I haven't a clue where to look."

"The princess was kidnapped?" Kira repeated in her surprise. "By who, how?"

"A half-elf, I wasn't close enough to hear what was said. He took her and escaped," Gabriel explained. "I don't know what the king is planning to do about it, he wouldn't let me stick around and listen, so I left to find her myself."

"Oh...I hope she's safe," Kira feared for the worse, since she knew Katela's story of kidnapping and rape. "I'll help you, however I can."

Gabriel smiled a little. "Thanks, I don't know how safe it will be though..."

"I can take care of myself! I've traveled here from Moss on my own after all!" Kira objected loudly. A few people from the crowd glanced at her. "Wait....what did you say your name was?"

"Gabriel Redricks," he repeated.

"Oh, by the gods, are you Alni's brother?"

Gabe nodded. "How do you know?"

"I'm Katela's niece! You met her when you were younger."

"Katela...yeah, I remember her. You're her niece? I didn't know she had any siblings," Gabe replied.

"She has three half-siblings, they're all human. My mother was the youngest," Kira explained. "We lived near the Mirror Forest. My father was an elf, but he died when the Mirror Forest was destroyed."

It was a strange coincidence to meet the relative of someone he knew so far from their homes, but welcome just the same. Having someone he was connected to was comforting and gave them a place to start.

"So where to now?" Kira asked after a long silent moment.

"I have no idea," Gabriel said and buried his face in his hands.

"Why not go back to Alan?"

"I can't face them! Not now...I have to try and find Ailil."

Kira sighed and rested her cheek on her propped-up hand. "Then why don't we each rent a room here tonight and start our search tomorrow?"

Gabriel sighed and debated it. "Yeah, that sounds good. I don't know if I can sleep though."

Kira smiled warmly which made her seem quite adorable. "I can get you some tea that'll help you sleep. How much gold do you have?"
