Kitsa and Orion: Dragonscale

Post by Kitsa Stormeyes »

It was a two day ride at a slow place to bring Kitsa and Orion to Dragonscale, Moss's nearest city. If Aiden went west, then it was likely he passed through this city. Kitsa did not rush the journey, it didn't seem that a trail already weeks cold would grow more untraceable by the day or hour. All she had to go on would be hearsay, that she knew. Instead, she enjoyed the journey with Orion. As they only had one horse between them, their pace was not much faster than it would have been on foot, as Soiff couldn't carry both of them and make good time to the city.

At midday, after camping for the night just off the main road, the walled city of Dragonscale, once known as Gyenon, came into view from a rise on the road. It was the main international port of Moss, set low on the banks of a river. Ships came up from the sea a few miles south to deliver goods, though some smaller vessels could travel upstream to the Highlands and Dragon Breath, the capital city.

"That is the city, I believe," Kitsa said as she paused at the top of the rise. The quarter-elf had changed from her normal eye-catching red garb to a more practical, though curve-hugging outfit consisting of earthy brown breeches, a green shirt, and brown vest with green embroidery. It had only been a matter of cleanliness that encouraged the switch after wearing her red outfit so much, but perhaps if there was trouble, being better camouflaged in this new environment would be to their benefit. She gave a sigh, trying to relieve some anxiety. After the confrontation with Anaiya, she was beginning to worry herself over dealing with others on the subject of her family. At least she likely wouldn't be running in to any other family members.

There was another person of note after Anaiya, a human woman named Acise Askani. While it was likely that Acise had long since passed on, Kitsa had entertained the idea of visiting this Askani family when she came to Lodoss, but now she had completely given up on tracking down any further families, aside from any possible descendants in Tarba from her father's marriage to the Marfa priestess Chaet around five hundred years ago. However, that search seemed possibly fruitless as Aiden would be a distant ancestor to them at this point.

Orion wrapped the reigns around the palm of his hand. It had been some time since he had last been in Moss. It was a landscape he found relaxing by comparison to the rest of Lodoss. So many individuals glossed over the nation due to politics or history, missing the ever-present beauty the land offered. The cities were kind and the people fair. The dragon riders had often impressed Orion. The level to which the warriors bonded with their mounts made more acceptable the prospect of the creatures' use by men. The two became an incredible force. It was a place that, before crossing paths with Kitsa, he had hoped to return to and explore again.

The task for which he arrived this time was one he felt almost hopeless. At best, they were guessing as to where Kitsa's relatives went. Dragonscale was a logical choice, but there was no guarantee, no trail, no way of knowing if it was the logical choice for wherever he happened to be going. Though Orion was not the type to pray to the gods, he was certain that only one entity could aid them at this point: Cha Za.

But he put his trust in Kitsa. What other option had he? Even if they never found Aiden, Orion could take pleasure and find value in the travels and time spent. And though the idea of finding a small place to settle with her dogged at the edges of his mind, it did not matter how the time was spent, so long as it was close to her. Orion had spent so much of his life wandering that this seemed fairly settled already. Wanderlust might deny him the romanticized possibility.

He missed the red attire too. Cleanliness was appreciated, it was her red to his white, an appealing asthetic, both metaphorically and literally. He made note to himself to encourage the two of them to take a room where she could do some washing.

"Let's continue," Kitsa spoke after admiring the view for a moment longer. The quarter-elf strode forward with renewed vigor. The city below was her goal, and whether or not they found Aiden Jr. was of little consequence. In truth, Kitsa was more excited to see a new place, and the city looked quite interesting and inviting from their hilltop vantage point.

After walking for about another mile, they reached the east gates of the city. The guards eyed the travelers rather suspiciously, especially Orion, but they made no moves to stop the two travelers. When their eyes met with Kitsa or Orion's, the guards offered a brief nod of acknowledgment.

As they stepped onto the streets of Dragonscale, Kitsa suddenly felt overwhelmed by the strange new city, though it was a far less busy place than Raiden. "Hmm... Where should we go?" Kitsa wondered aloud. "Have you ever been here before, Orion?"

"Once before." Kitsa was operating on a premise that Orion's travels had proved true. It was considered the gateway to Moss and, rightfully so, he had entered the nation through this city. In that time, he was less comfortable in urban spaces, so he had minimized his time there. While he appreciated the humble nature many of the citizens possessed, the cities of Moss were not his primary reason for going there. "My first and only arrival to Moss began here. That was many years ago. I can't imagine the men I knew here to be alive still."

The statement was something of a lie. Throughout his ride, his travel to Moss, another, darker thought clung to the back of his mind. It was a face, a memory of someone. Looking at Kitsa eased that pain, but the thought of those he met in Moss brought it back: Kiro. There was a reason Orion had never returned. It was the land where Kiro disappeared. His best friend, the only person who had ever truly known Orion. Kitsa had since filled that wound.

Orion furrowed his eyes for a moment, then relaxed. "I'm sure anywhere is fine."

Kitsa nodded to Orion while she studied the street ahead. She knew how long 'many years ago' was to an elf, so she supposed that this could potentially be a whole new place for Orion. In that case, they were on their own to finding sensible lodgings, though with their final payment from Seri thus far unspent, leaving them with a fine sum to secure practically anything they would need. Considering Orion's antisocial tendencies, and the fact that both of them were rangers, an actual bed wasn't really a necessity on their journey, except perhaps when their travels brought them to cities like this.

"I suppose that we should find some inns," Kitsa said. "I am not sure where to begin looking for information on my brother, but inns would be a good option, I think." The quarter-elf walked down the main street, heading into the heart of the city. She didn't like the thought of searching numerous inns, but she could only hope that information came to them quickly. To that end, Kitsa murmured a prayer to Cha Za under her breath.

Orion watched the city go by. So much had changed, it truly was unrecognizable. Very few businesses were familiar to him. Stands, shops, all with different names, different people in the windows. Though he had not lived in the city, Kiro and he had spent enough time there to become familiar with the surroundings and some faces. Images of the city over 100 years ago flowed back. And in every one of them, his only friend was smiling. But, like this city he remembered, Kiro had to be gone by now.

It was then, in the midst of those memories, that one matched. Age had rusted the metal sign that hung over the doorway, but it read the same: The Last Resort. It was an inn, one that Orion and Kiro had spent each of their nights in Dragonscale. By no means was it luxury, but it had what two young men needed to get by. In its time, it was a rowdy place, where bar fights were common and shady men could be met for deals, but it seemed so quiet now. For the average visitor, it still had its own welcoming charm. Without a word, Orion dismounted right there.

Realizing how he could be worrying Kitsa with his odd behavior, he managed a couple of words. "We can stay here."

Where Orion saw memories at every turn in the city, Kitsa only saw a new local, an unfamiliar city in a new land. It had a sense of wonderment to her, though at the same time, she had to wonder what it looked like in her father's day. His last passage through Dragonscale was likely at least a hundred and twenty years ago, though back then it was known as Gyenon, the capital of a duchy, long before the nation of Moss united under the rule of the Highlands.

Kitsa gave a start when Orion suddenly halted at an inn that didn't seem to be any more unique than a number of other inns they had passed by. "Have you been here before?" she asked. He said it had been a long time since had been to the city, but the stone buildings could last for hundreds of years, so long as they were maintained.
