After the death of King Kadamos VII and his family at the start of the Marmo invasion, Duke Raster was eventually selected to become regent and hold the throne of Alania until a suitable heir for the throne could be found. However, Raster was a cowardly and greedy man, and began raising taxes across Alania to fund the “war effort”, but most of the taxes went straight to his pocket. Due to his tax increases, some of the villages to the east declared their independence, following the example of the village of Zaxon. The campaign for independence was spearheaded by Slayn Starseeker, the Sage of the North, and supported by Parn the Free Knight.
For several years, Raster sent mercenaries and soldiers to demand back taxes, going so far as to destroy the village of Hanam, and demanding that the villagers of Zaxon kill Slayn and his accomplices and deliver their heads to him in exchange for not punishing the villagers. However, the villagers would not be put down and his soldiers in Hanam were defeated by a peasant army led by Parn and Slayn from Zaxon. Though his aggressive campaign eased in the following years, he still sent mercenaries from time to time, once including Shiris and Orson who would become Parn’s allies.
However, he also began to support the Marmo army in later years, believing that they were an unstoppable force, and it was best to get in line behind them instead of opposing them. Eventually, his support of Marmo would become evident, and in NRC 525, King Kashue of Flaim laid siege on Alan to remove Raster from power. He killed Duke Raster and installed the recently discovered heir, Ropus II, as the king of Alania.
